The California Academy of Sciences’ botanical collections and scientific research activities were housed at the Conservatory when it was completed in 1879. It was also used for public entertainment in its early years. More than 1,000 varieties of tropical plants from all over the globe are on display under its vast glass dome. It’s open every day except Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day, when it’s closed for the holidays.
The Garden Conservancy in SF offers daily docent-led tours or self-guided tours so that visitors may see the exhibits at their own pace. No reservations are required for docent-led tours, which are included in the price of admission. Group sizes are capped at 20 people each tour, however.
Hundreds of Plants
Hundreds of exotic plant species from every continent may be seen in the Conservatory’s striking architecture and design. Displays include humidified cloud forests, deserts of Africa and the Caribbean, a tropical rainforest, and even a desert pavilion.
Carnivorous plants, orchids, aquatic plants, and palms are just few of the flora that call the Conservatory home. Among the oldest specimens at the conservatory is a 4-foot-tall Erythrina variegata from Brazil. Torrey pine and San Francisco oak are two of California’s most endangered species that may be seen in a unique exhibit at the Conservatory.
After your tour, relax with a delicious lunch at Golden Gate Park or at the Dutch Windmill before heading back to the city. You can even book a chic and stunning luxury picnic, embellished with flowers and garlands to match your motif for the day.
