How to prepare for a ski trip

Skiing challenges body and mind. We’ve compiled a collection of navigation tips.

Sunscreen!
UV radiation rises rapidly with altitude. Skiers and snowboarders get sunburned more easily on snow because it reflects light. After two hours, reapply moisturizer. Thin clouds can let 80% of UV light through.

Hydrate!
Water helps your body adjust to high altitude. To compensate for altitude’s low humidity, drink or eat twice as much water or electrolytes.

Drinking adequate water before a high-altitude trek helps reduce joint discomfort and stiffness. Dehydration hinders joint repair because cartilage is mainly water.

Multiple studies suggest that mountain dwellers consume less water than their lower-lying counterparts. Dehydrated people breathe forcefully and regularly, thus they lose fluid with each breath. In low humidity, humans sweat more. If you’re hungry, drink more. Water-heavy meals aren’t a viable alternative for water when traveling. Fruits and veggies are 90% water.

Recharge
Sleep well and eat well before the gym. Before skiing, get adequate rest and eat healthily. If you become hungry regularly, keep some food in your jacket. Last, limit your alcohol intake. When you drink, your blood oxygen level lowers, which is problematic at high elevations.
